Dubai is the second largest among the United Arab Emirates (UAE) seven Emirates – Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm al Quain, Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah.
It lies along the coast of the Arabian Gulf and extends over 72km. It is the UAE’s most influential port and commercial centre. The city is divided by a creek known as the Dubai Creek or Khor Dubai, that is 13km long and between 100m and 500m wide. Dubai has a total area of 83,000 sq km – but only constitutes 4.9% of the UAE’s total area. Its population was 1.2 million in 2004 and rose to 1.4 million in 2010.
